 DEAR SIR:
The enclosed article discloses a scheme by which Hon C. J. Ingersoll et id omne hoped to divide the now unanimous north. I know the fact that the administration would have been requested by the five ex presidents to grant an armistice but for the hesitancy of Mr. Van Buren - who declined to unite until he should be assured that the administration desired to be approached in that way. As this was just what the originators of the scheme did not want it may have fallen through.
