Gravestone Photographs

This cemetery is located one mile North of Scottslawn Road and one quarter mile east of Watkins Road on South side of Hinton-Mill Road on the west bank of Mill Creek. The photographs on this page comprise a complete photographic inventory of the gravestones found here. This cemetery has been in existance for nearly two centuries as the first burial was in December, 1819. Beer's History of Union County, Ohio (Chicago, 1883), Part V, page 367 tells about the early history of the cemetery:
In the first settlement which was made here [Dover Township], on the west bank of Mill Creek, was early established what is now known as the Buxton Cemetery. This place is on the high rolling ground on the west bank of Mill Creek, and was first dedicated to the reception of the dead by receiving the body of Arthur Badley, who died December 14, 1819. He was a young man twenty-eight year os age. Other early settlers interred here were William Badley, John Hannaman, Hezekiah Burdick, John Burdick, James B. Clark, Jonathan Bowen, Adam Richey, with some of their wives. Some early interred here have no monuments or tombstones to tell to the present or future generations whose remains are quietly resting b eneath the sod, and even those who had treasured in their memories the names of those buried in these sacrd places, have nearly all passed into the sepulcher of the dead, and with them are forever lost the names and memories of those within the unmarked graves.
NOTE: Items that are underlined in black are the Webmaster's "best guess." Items found in brackets ( [ ] ) are either documented, i.e. death certificates, or were found in the published records.
