Gravestone Photographs

The address and phone number listed for the Oak Hill Cemetery office is 104 Lafayette Road, London, OH 43140; phone (740) 852-1518. The cemetery is on the far east side of London on south side of Lafayette Road (US Route 42). GPS coordinates are: Latitude 39.8997827 (395359N), Longitude -83.4321416 (0832556W)

This once well cared for cemetery has been surrounded by modern strip malls, fast food establishments, and assorted other businesses. Some of London's earliest families chose Oak Hill as their final resting place, including one early Congressman, Henry Brush, 1778-1855 (no photo). In addition to the underground burials a mausoleum has been provided for those who prefer to be entombed. Near the center of the cemetery are two large circles of Civil War veterans' graves surrounding a monument that was "Erected to the memory of the fallen soldiers, by R. Cowling, the English patriot. 1871." The Watson-Dungan (See also below.) tombstone is the first eye catching monument we noticed as we arrived at the cemetery from downtown London, but there are many more pieces of funerary art scattered among the more simple markers in the cemetery. Some of those can be seen below.
