Berlin Township Cemetery

Delaware County, Ohio

Berlin Township/New Cheshire Cemetery, Delaware County, Ohio

Gravestone Photographs

Located on the north side of Cheshire Road (County 72) about halfway between Gregory Road (County 96) and Lackey/Old State Road (County 10), Berlin Township Cemetery is also known as New Cheshire Cemetery. Remains from the old Cheshire, Berlin Townhouse (AKA Township House), and Blockhouse (AKA McNamara) cemeteries were moved here when the Alum Creek Dam was built. They would have been underwater if left where they were. Near the entrance there is a large sign with a map of the cemetery showing the sections and on the back is a list of all interments at the cemetery with locations of the graves. The sexton says the map is current through 2004. The cemetery is one of the best cared for that we have visited and the relocated remains from the earlier cemeteries were very well organized and carefully reinterred.

I have separated the photographs taken at Berlin Townhouse (AKA Township House) section and Blockhouse (AKA McNamara) section into separate lists, treating each as a complete cemetery. The two sections have been completely photographed. It will take some time before the photographs are all uploaded. So if you would like to have a photo, or photos, of gravestones not now online just write to me at the E-mail address below.

If you have photos taken at this cemetery and would like to share them, please, write to me at .

Townhouse (Township House) Cemetery

Townhouse (Berlin Township House) Cemetery, 1825-1880

Originally located in or near the village of Cheshire, the Townhouse Cemetery was probably the second cemetery in Berlin Township. It apparently served as a churchyard cemetery as there was a church building on the same land that was eventually used as the town hall. The earliest known burial was that of Joseph Eaton who died in 1825 at the age of 59 years (see the photographs below). The photograph above shows only the first four rows of the cemetery at its new location in the northwest corner of Berlin Township cemetery.

The rows in this section run south to north. The photographs were taken, beginning in the southeast corner, from south to north; next row north to south and continuing in that pattern to the end. The photographs are all listed in the order taken, though no distinction is made between rows.
