Scott Hawley tells us that he is not related to this young woman in any way.  The photograph was found in the collection of Scott's Great-Grand Aunt, Grace Hafford Ankrom, who identified the woman as a neighbor of the Hafford family who lived on Delaware Avenue in Columbus. Scott goes on to say, "Actually, if a descendent of any of these folks notices these pictures and wants them, they can contact me. I would just want to see how they are related for proof."

Actually, there is more information about Mayme's family on the photograph than there is about the young lady herself. On the back is a death notice and obituary for Mayme's mother, Caroline Spangler Schultz, and near the bottom of the same side is a list of Mayme's siblings: Clara, Irvin, and Cora. According to the death notice and obituary for Caroline Schultz she was married to John H. Schultz a detective, probably with the Columbus police department.

A little online research has provided a sketch of most members of the family. John H. Schultz, Mayme's father, was born in Germany on February 22, 1851; he was the son of Charles and Lizetta South Schultz. John died May 31, 1924 in Plain City, Madison County, Ohio. His death certificate lists his occupation as "Attorney." Census records and Columbus city directories most often list him as a detective residing at 983 Delaware Avenue, Columbus. The 1891-92 Columbus directory shows that John H. Schultz still resided at the Delaware Avenue address, but he is shown as the manager of Retail Merchants Protective Association located at 105½ South High Street. After Caroline's death in 1890 John was married a second time to a woman named Josephine (1910 census). Several members of the Schultz family, including Charles and Lizetta Schultz, are buried at Green Lawn Cemetery, section 30, lot 173W. Charles Schultz was born February 14, 1822 and died July 22, 1892; his wife, Lizetta, daughter of John South, was born in Germany, May 1823 and died September 2, 1893.

Mayme's mother, Caroline Spangler Schultz was born December 5, 1848 in Columbus and died November 18, 1890, the daughter of Jonathan and Mary Spangler. She had four children: Mary L. "Mayme," Clara, George Irvin, and Cora Ellen.

Mary L. "Mayme" Schultz was born August 25, 1875 in Columbus and died there on July 10, 1944; she married first, John E. Miller who was born March 8, 1870 and died September 27, 1924. She married second, James Hiestand. According to her obituary she had a son, John and a daughter, Mrs. Fay Freeman. According to her sister Cora's obituary (see below) her name was Mary Huston, but it's possible that was just an incorrect spelling of Heistand, possibly caused by poor handwriting.

Clara is mentioned in Mary's obituary (see above) as Mrs. Clara Weber. Nothing further is known.

George Irvin, who is called Irvin on the back of the photograph was born March 22, 1882 in Columbus. At the time of his death, April 24, 1922, he was a salesman for the Buckeye Tent & Awning Co. At the time of the 1910 census George I. Schultz is shown with a wife, Ellen B. age 30; and two children, Eva M. age 6 and Robert F., age 4. The couple had been married for 8 years.

Cora Ellen Schultz was born May 17, 1885, died July 11, 1932 in Columbus (her obituary); she is buried with her husband, Leslie Cushman Akison (his obituary) in the Schultz family plot mentioned above. Leslie Cushman Akison, the son of James Akison and Lori Brown, was born June 12, 1883 in Columbus and died May 29, 1948 in Middletown, Butler County, Ohio. He married second, Catherine Mack who survived him.
