Alton Post Office established on 31 July 1837, discontinued on 4 March 1846. (USGS GNIS) According to William Martin, in his 1858 HISTORY OF FRANKLIN COUNTY, page 252-- "After the construction of the National Road, in the spring of 1836, the town of Alton was laid out by Thomas Graham, and a post office was established there. The successive postmasters have been: John Graham, first; Mervin Stearwalt, second; David P. Cole, third; Solomon Putman, fourth; Goodhue McGill, fifth; and A. W. Shearer, sixth and present." In the previous paragraph Martin states that there was a Methodist Church in Alton. The church building still stands and the graveyard established behind it is still there, though only a few stones remain. The cemetery was restored by volunteers of Franklin Countiy's Operation Flag in 2003 and the two Civil War veterans whose remains are interred there were honored with new gravestones and a Memorial Day Ceremony. This cemetery is still in use. (See also: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~rocky/Franklin_Cemeteries/alton/alton.html)
