WEBMASTER'S NOTE:  The pictures of these early Franklin County "homesteads" along with their descriptions are all that's left of many of them as they were torn down and replaced with modern dwellings or businesses. Some of the buildings were a far cry from what is normally thought of as a "homestead". The word brings to mind a log cabin or at most a rough frame dwelling. There are examples of that kind of home, but there are also examples of beautiful brick homes that must be called, at the very least, substantial. Also, found on these pages is at least one example of a what can only be called a mansion, located at 288 E. Broad, the location is now the home of a Starbucks and Quiznos Sub shop. Some of the homes were already had already become simply memories by the time the booklet appeared. Others have fallen into disuse and decay. All are part of the history of Franklin County and all played their individual roll in that history.
