Soldiers' Section in Section M
Green Lawn Cemetery
Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio

Soldiers' Section in Section M, Green Lawn Cemetery, Columbus, Franklin County, OH

Section M contains the graves of many other individuals, but a portion of the section, crowning a small hill, was set aside for the remains of Union Soldiers from several states, many of whom died at Camp Chase. Some replacement stones for Union soldiers from Tennessee show them as Confederat soldiers--they were not. The graves are arranged in circles within circles. There are 493 graves of which forty are "Unknown." Only one photograph of the unknowns, as a representative of all forty, will appear on this page.

On November 24, 2004 the following infromation was contributed by Susie Martin-Rott ():
There are three men listed on your page from this group [the Iowa 37th], which is a very famous Iowa unit because it was the only unit in the country comprised of men 45 and over. Nicknamed the 'Greybeards' they were a non-combat unit assigned as prison and hospital guards and for garrison duty. This unit contained the oldest known man to serve in a Civil War unit, Private Curtis King of Muscatine Iowa who enlisted at age 80!"

Susie, who is writing a book about this regiment, would welcome hearing from any descendants or others regarding these men (Benjamin Franklin Fairbanks, Philip Flannery, Peter France) and other members of the Iowa 37th. She sites her source for the information (errors included) contained on this page as: Roster and Record of Iowa Soldiers in Miscellaneous Organizations of the Mexican War, Indian Campaigns, War of the Rebellion and the Spanish-American and Philippine Wars: together with Historical Sketches of Volunteer Organizations. Published by authority of the General Assembly, under the direction of Brig. Gen. Guy E. Logan, Adjutant General, Des Moines Iowa, Emory H. English, State Printer E. D. Chassell, State Binder 1911

NOTES:  Thanks are due to Brent D. Nimmo () who continues to send information for me to use on this page and others.

A few gravestones are illegible; those have been identified using a grave placement map and list of names that accompanies it.  The map and list were supplied by Shelley May, project coordinator for Franklin County's Operation Flag.

Additional information might also be available at Franklin County Veteran Grave Registration.
