THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH, Columbus, Ohio, Monday, October 27, 1930, pages 1, 6 Woman Victim of Burns Received when Clothing Ignites from Open Grate --------- Mother of Five, Burned to Death Mrs. Mina Schopp, aged 34, of 106 West Noble street, the mother of five children, . . . Mrs. Schopp died, Monday, in St. Francis hospital from serious body burns suffered, Sunday, when she stepped into an open grate at her home. A year ago a similar accident occurred. Police said Mrs. Schopp's clothing was ignited when she attempted to start a fire at her home with coal oil but this was denied by her husband, Peter Schopp. "My wife has been ill and tonight I started a fire and told her to stay away from it," he said. "We didn't have any coal oil in the house, but she must have been too near the fireplace. Only a year ago she stepped into the open fireplace and burned herself badly." Mrs. Schopp was alone when the accident occurred. She ran into her yard and M. Faulkner, 708 South High street, who was in a store across the street, heard her scream. He hastened to her aid and extinguished her burning clothing by placing his overcoat over her. She was taken to St. Francis hospital. Mrs. Schopp leaves two daughters and three sons; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Smyers of near Laurelville; and sister and three brothers. The body has been removed to the home of her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mrs. and Mrs. Charles Deitchel, 142 West Mound street, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Green Lawn cemetery by Denton & Donaldson.
