In 1806 Edward Phelps and Isaac Griswold arrived in Franklin County from Windsor, Connecticut and became the first settlers in what was to become Blendon Township.  According to Martin's 1858 History of Franklin County, Edward Phelps "is said to have cut the first tree ever felled by a white man in the township."  In 1808 several more men came to Blendon Township from Windsor, Connecticut and they were joined by others from Vermont, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.  Among the latter group was Timothy Lee, Esq. In 1832 Edward Phelps and Timothy Lee donated the land for Central Blendon Cemetery. Today the cemetery is bordered on the west by Hempstead Road and on the south by Dempsey Road and lies very near the exact center of the township.  The cemetery has been restored and is maintained by the Blendon Township Trustees.  The last published reading of the gravestones was done in 1981.  Earlier readings of the gravestones appeared in the Old Northwest Genealogical Quarterly in 1903 and 1907.  An additional reading appears in the Lillian Brown Gosset book, By One Spirit: History of the Central College United Presbyterian Church; the Central College of Ohio; the Blendon Central (Greenfield, Ohio; Greenfield Printing and Publishing Co., 1976)

Edward Phelps was laid to rest in this cemetery after his death on August 10, 1840 at the age of 81 years.  His neighbor, Timothy Lee and his wife are also buried there. Rhoda (Taylor) Lee died on April 30, 1848 at the age of 53 years, 2 months. Timothy Lee was 76 years, 6 months old when he died on January 14, 1862.
