State Old Insane & Penal Cemetery
Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio

Gravestone Photographs

The cemetery has no name that I'm aware of.  I call it Asylum #1 because there are three such cemeteries in close proximity.  This cemetery was used by Franklin County for "Insane Asylum/Idiotic Asylum" burials and, later, for prisoner burials and some indigents.  There are aproximately 311 graves.  It is located near the intersection of McKinnley Avenue and Harper Road.  It can be seen to the south of I-70 eastbound.

The prisoner gravestone photos were taken starting in the southeast corner of the cemetery across to the southwest corner (row 1); all rows were photographed east to west.  There seems to be seven rows of prisoner graves. Right now only four rows appear here.  On most stones is the name, the letter "c" or "w" (indicating race?), and the years of birth and death.  There are aproximately 311 graves in this cemetery.
